Bella Ciao Lyrics and History

Bella Ciao is an Italian revolutionary song adopted by resistant Italian supporters during the Second World War. The lyrics were written in late 1944 to the music of a popular song that sang mondine at the beginning of the 20th century.

Today, this song has become a hymn to resistance around the world.

The song appears mainly in two notable scenes: when Moscow finds the second tunnel, the robbers all start Bella Ciao together, in a flashback to the house of Toledo, where the Professor and Berlin interpret Bella Ciao after a long discussion.

Before the birth of the series, many people had already taken up this hymn. After the emergence of La Casa de Papel, the song became very popular and was also taken up and remixed.

Bella Ciao Lyrics

Una mattina mi sono alzato
O bella ciao, bella ciao, bella ciao ciao ciao
Una mattina mi sono alzato
E ho trovato invasor
O partigiano portami via
O bella ciao, bella ciao, bella ciao ciao ciao
O partigiano portami via
Ché mi sento di morir
E se io muoio da partigiano
O bella ciao, bella ciao, bella ciao ciao ciao
E se io muoio da partigiano
Tu mi devi seppellir
E seppellire lassù in montagna
O bella ciao, bella ciao, bella ciao ciao ciao
E seppellire lassù in montagna
Sotto l’ombra di un bel fior
Tutte le genti che passeranno
O bella ciao, bella ciao, bella ciao ciao ciao
E le genti che passeranno
Mi diranno: che bel fior
Quest’è il fiore del partigiano
O bella ciao, bella ciao, bella ciao ciao ciao
Quest’è il fiore del partigiano
Morto per la libertà.

Translation of Bella Ciao

One morning I got up
O bella ciao, bella ciao, bella ciao ciao ciao
One morning I got up,
and I found the invader.
Hey ! partisan take me
O bella ciao, bella ciao, bella ciao ciao ciao
Hey! partisan take me away,
Because I feel myself dying
And if I die in partisan
O bella ciao, bella ciao, bella ciao ciao ciao
And if I die in partisan,
You will have to bury me.
That you bury me on the mountain
O bella ciao, bella ciao, bella ciao ciao ciao
That you bury me on the mountain,
In the shade of a beautiful flower
All the people who will pass
O bella ciao, bella ciao, bella ciao ciao ciao
And the people who pass by will
say to Me “What a beautiful flower”
It is the flower of the partisan
O bella ciao, bella ciao, bella ciao ciao ciao
It is the flower of the partisan
Death for freedom.
